Chalcedony is a mineral (a microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline variety of quartz) characterised by an aligned fibrous structure and a translucent or waxy appearance. • Origin of the name: From the Greek Chalkedón (Chalcedon), an ancient city in Bithynia, Turkey. Chalcedony encompasses a broad family of ornamental stones and gemstones, including: • Agate and Onyx • Carnelian (red/orange) • Chrysoprase (green) • Bloodstone (green with red flecks) • Blue chalcedony (a milky-blue shade highly prized in jewellery) Traditionally considered a stone associated with calm, communication (the throat chakra) and emotional balance.
